A multi-instrumentalist with a powerfully soulful voice, Simpson has long been critically admired and respected by other musicians. In 1993 she released a mini-album, Veve, that saw an impressive array of performers, including Shane O'Mara, Chris Wilson, Vika and Linda Bull and Ollie Olsen eager to help out.

Of her singing and songs on that album, The Who's Who of Australian Rock quoting The Melbourne Age said; "Simpson sounds a bit like Patti Smith singing torch songs, holding a bottle of tequila in one hand and a Dear John letter in the other." Other reviewers were equally enthusiastic, comparing her to Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan.
